The Novelty Of Routines: Local Electronica Whiz Intriguant Is Radiant On His New EP

Sometimes you gotta splash some oil onto the gears to get a machine in motion. For the creative cogs of Intriguant, he just needed to get some new music out of his system. After three years, the local prominent beatmaker and sound sculptor delivers a new EP that communicates his return to the cycle, and aptly enough, it’s called Routines.
“One has to build structure in their daily lives and commit to the rules that you have set,” describes the synopsis of this EP in Intriguant’s official press release. “With these matters at play, only then the mind will adapt and affirm to change. And through repetition, you can discover the infinite possibilities for the future.” The future in question has always been a bright one when you consider Intriguant’s stacked assortment of accolades that range from his multiple albums and contributions to audio-visual collective Syndicate, as well as the scene-stirring activity of his UPLOADING series. And in his next endeavour with the release of Routines, the homegrown multi-hyphenate shows a brilliance and discipline that pervades the execution of its native tracks.
You have the broken beat assault of “Upkeep”, stomping the yard with its restless syncopation and weighty percussive presence. “Cedar” embarks on an atmospheric housey expedition with a four-on-the-floor heartbeat, throbbing with oscillating instrumentation that pushes and pulls. Breaks are explored with the rolling deluge of snug synths and chopped vocal accoutrements that is “Aligned”. And then you have the iridescent “Glimmer”, a euphoric climax that radiates like sunlight and a running core arpeggio that dashes across like a shooting star.
Routines is a departure from Intriguant’s previous Spirits record that lurked in the darker ends of his repertoire. Instead what you have here is an impassioned electronica album that playfully toys with a contrast between mellow thick textures and bright melodious motifs; a dance between light and shadow that embraces all facets of Intriguant’s imagination. Even in routine, you can produce a difference. His latest adventure is proof of that.
