They’ve turned on the enjoy with their ragtag crew of resident selectors and their spontaneous pop-up parties. Now the upstarts of Super Enjoy are somersaulting into their next chapter with the launch of their new offering. Cue the fanfare ’cos Super Enjoy is now a label.

It’s appropriate when you consider the accomplished and well-paced histories of its members. Collectively they boast a wealth of expertise, from El Professional’s and Bongomann’s longstanding stint with vinyl store The Analog Vault (and its label TAV Records), to Dexter Colt’s equally established resume with Darker Than Wax, and Jenn Chunes’ eclectic programming for Wild Pearl. Aside from being deft selectors, Super Enjoy’s members also dabble in production, making the identity’s progression into a label that pushes other producers a natural one.

For its debut release, Super Enjoy ropes in a local virtuoso who we described as one of the most complex producers of our time, and we still stand by that. Yet despite mastering his signature sound, Fzpz is now swerving sideways with a new alias and sound to boot. Sigmoid Fn is the freshly minted moniker of the prodigious electronic whiz, and for Super Enjoy’s inaugural release, he’s showing the world that he’s not out of tricks.

Eponymously titled the Sigmoid Fn EP, the four-track collection is a departure from Fzpz’s prior jazzier experiments and boom-bap frontiers. Instead this is an inspired expedition that embraces the lexicon of computers and machinery, rooted in an unbudgeable adoration for sequencing and synthesis. Opening track “Classification” is evidence of this, with chiming echoing synths that Kraftwerk would endorse, coated with Balearic downtempo textures and a palatable riff that doesn’t overstay its welcome. “EDA” continues the narrative with robotic murmurs and hushed mechanic twinkles. And on “Pyplot”, you have a more spry number with a house beat that’s wide awake, dancefloor-friendly with full-bodied bass notes and shooting star synths.

The unveiling of Sigmoid Fn has granted Fzpz the gift to explore new nuances of his creativity, and we have Super Enjoy to thank for letting us hear it for the first time.
