Amidst the flurry of terrible news in the music scene, some pieces of positivity still manage to float to the surface. Taking the past half-year to regroup and rebuild, Kult Kafe has now unveiled its new home at The Grandstand, sporting an optimistic aura – and its same sequestered charm – in these dark times.

Its new address at 200 Turf Club Road is aligned with the distinctive visitor experience of Kult Kafe’s former Emily Hill address; you have to make an extra effort to get here. The latest iteration of Kult Kafe finds its haunt nestled along the side of The Grandstand, a building that was once a playground for equestrian enthusiasts as a horseracing course. It’s an appropriate relocation that’s managed to capture the venue’s secluded, in-the-know essence while in the vicinity of the Bukit Timah destination’s natural footfall. It’s just the right kind of out-of-the-way.

The new Kult Kafe’s got the best of both worlds. The elongated patio entertains the brand’s inclination for al fresco boozing and socialising, while its spacious air-conditioned interior offers a more restaurant vibe that doesn’t feel out of place. Brick-walled arches, mood lighting and artistic ornaments give it a bohemian yet refined aesthetic. And there’s even an upcoming alcove in the back that will eventually open up to pop-up events, absolutely in line with the Kult Kafe identity.

And because Kult Kafe’s got itself an F&B license, its soft launch isn’t affected by the recent ban on nightlife venues that have pivoted into snack bars (that travesty is for another story). Currently sticking to the strict social distancing guidelines, which includes the controversial ‘no recorded music rule’, the restored institution features an eclectic menu that spans pita sandwiches, bar bites and special cocktails. It’s a menu designed to keep you there for an extra hour or two, and it’s effective.

While this new Kult Kafe is still in its early stages, the potential of the space is palpably clear to see. And with the dry spell that continues to hang over the scene, its revival is a much-needed morale booster that we do need more of.
