For any local music scene to thrive, it requires a sturdy and supportive infrastructure that goes beyond its pool of performers. Two of these pillars that’ve helped foster the climate over the years are SGMUSO, a non-profit entity that creates opportunities for musicians to grow in business and skills; and SCAPE INVASION, known for nurturing the youth with its roaming concerts and programmes in schools. So when these two powerhouses come together, you can expect a novel initiative that knows the ropes and bolsters the scene.

This upcoming joint project goes by the name of bare., a co-organised festival on 14 December that boasts a medley of artistes and a minimalist theme. The theme takes shape in the revamped Ground Theatre at *SCAPE, coming to life with the light-centric stage design of visual artist, Nicholas Ong. bare. is also the first festival to use this newly unveiled gig space, and is the first of four presentations by SCAPE Invasion – a buzz-garnering debut with undeniably more to come.

Dishing out the soundtrack to this sensorial affair is an ensemble of acts both familiar and fresh-faced. Scene-chasers would be well-acquainted with dream-pop darlings, Sobs, and their dazey, breezy summer jams. Piling on the reverb is Bedchamber from Jakarta, also armed with guitar-swirling earworms not unlike the misty textures of DIIV and Real Estate.

Joining these two bigger outfits are the pop stylings of emerging trio, HE1ST, who played at Baybeats’ Open Stage this year; the polished indie-pop of Royal Estate, fresh off their debut EP titled A Love Letter To Innocence; and the wistful, introspective alt-ballads of singer-songwriter, Nigel Cheah, an alumnus of the Noise Music Mentorship.

With sandwiches and lager provided by REBEL and Binjai Brew respectively – both local businesses that bare. takes pride in supporting – this inaugural festival looks to be a first step in a vast journey ahead.
