A concert in a coffeeshop? We live in a scene that just keeps on giving.

Bridging live music and DJs to communities in the heartlands, there’s a new series called Neighbourhood Desk Tunes that’s cranking out the choons. Introducing a twist to gig venues, the ongoing series currently pops up at selected outlets of co-organiser Kim San Leng, a renowned franchise that’s one of the oldest coffeeshop chains in Singapore since 1950. Neighbourhood Desk Tunes had its first edition at Kim San Leng’s Yishun Avenue 11 outlet last month, and it’ll be reappearing for another round at Pioneer Junction on 17 October.

Aside from governmental support with endorsements by Enterprise Singapore and the National Arts Council, Neighbourhood Desk Tunes was also conceptualised by other co-founders, Culture, who’ve made their claim to fame through chatter-attracting themed parties. They’ve stepped up and come a long way from just throwing nightlife events, and they’re now making a bigger societal impact with this community-targeted endeavour. Kudos to them.

The second edition of Neighbourhood Desk Tunes will be a throwback to the noughties, with music selections and trivia showdowns celebrating 2000s pop culture. Entertainment will be dished out by Dew Francis, with performances from singer-songwriter Layyi and veteran selector-turntablist DJ Pin. And the best part about all of this? Entry is absolutely free.

Neighbourhood Desk Tunes, 17 October 2024, 7.30pm-10.30pm, Kim San Leng, #01-08 Pioneer Junction, 3 Soon Lee Street, Singapore 627606, free entry. Follow Culture on Instagram for more information.
