The mirage of desire often plays tricks on the mind, especially in the capricious territory of love. Emerging singer and producer, Dnl., has something to say about these illusive temptations, moulding his thoughts into his new single, “Fantasy”.

The upbeat yet self-deprecating number sees the local artiste – a diploma holder of Music and Audio Technology from Singapore Polytechnic – assuming the role of a tormented protagonist pining for his muse. “Yeah you got me looking like I’m in desperation / When you looking like a divine creation,” he confesses in buttery triplet flow, just one of the many vocal techniques he wields on the track. His spotless, high-ranged timbre floats atop a layered mass of chubby bass squiggles and crystalline jazz pads, punctuated with a propulsive chorus featuring a gluey hook. It’s a delicate yet un-flimsy balance held together by a calculated scarcity of elements, mirroring the fragility of the fantasy he speaks of.

Still, Dnl. manages to reinforce the foundation by roping in local rapper, Axel Brizzy. His tough-as-nails contribution switches up the mood of the song with an air of machismo, perpetuating the fiction even further. Brizzy lays down a rolling execution that doesn't trip up, playing with diverse rhyme patterns and speeds in delivery. “Is it a dream or did I wake up in a fantasy? / Don’t wake me up if the answer gon’ be the latter,” he enunciates fluidly all while dropping pop cultural references from The Beatles to Hennessy on the rocks.

“Fantasy” follows a string of pop-inclined releases by Dnl., including his seven-track delusions EP released in 2020. From these preliminary steps, he’s beginning to prove his chops as a noteworthy producer, impressive vocalist, and eloquent author of narratives. And that’s most certainly a reality.
