Save LITHE HOUSE: The Storied Institution Of The Local Scene At Risk Of Closure
The local music scene doesn’t have many places that encourage free expression of live alternative music. Back when it was known as Lithe Paralogue in the early 2010s, a multi-functional jamming studio along Aliwal Street, this enduring establishment helped all sorts of bands hone their chops and sharpen their showmanship. Right now, no thanks to the wrath of COVID, LITHE HOUSE needs the help of the scene.
While the two-month circuit breaker period in Singapore is officially wrapping up, the noose isn’t getting looser around the neck of the events industry. The plodding reopening of restrictions in phases means it’ll be a while before we see businesses like LITHE HOUSE being fully operational. To survive this ordeal, the modest bastion of the local music scene has launched a fundraising campaign to help keep its head above water, while it struggles with rent and utilities without business as usual. This year also marks what would’ve been its 10th year anniversary.
Currently based in a shophouse along Madras Street, LITHE HOUSE has persevered through the years as a conducive, creative space for musicians with its well-equipped jamming studio. History is literally strewn across the walls of this snug spot, as it houses the Museum of Independent Music, Singapore, documenting the rise of the island’s oft-overlooked scene.
Aside from being the base of operations for its label arm, Lithe Records – that has assisted bands like Forests, Yumi, and sub:shaman – LITHE HOUSE is also respected as a versatile gig space, hosting both international acts and its very own Sound Of Feeling band showcases that promote everything from post-rock to hardcore. Ask anyone from a local alternative band, and chances are that they’ve stepped into LITHE HOUSE at least once, either as a performer or a spectator.
LITHE HOUSE is far from the only place affected by these crippling times. But as someone who used to jam in this place for years, and who has seen countless bands make a name for themselves in this storied institution, I truly don’t want to see this place go. If it’s within your power, you can do your part to help keep it alive.
LITHE HOUSE, 23 Madras Street, Singapore 208418. You can assist LITHE HOUSE via their official fundraising campaign.
