Feeling battered by the barrage of a turbo-paced rat race, Tiny Hoarse have gone giddy-up with this vociferous response. The experimental screamo quintet have released “mice ilo” – a cheeky anagram on the Singaporean bevvie of choice – as a raucous commentary on a perishing city and keeping spirits afloat amidst a bleak future. The band succinctly describe it as a message of “alienation and existential dissonance”; and we get it, sometimes you just gotta make some noise about it. For Tiny Hoarse, they’ve generated plenty of it.

“mice ilo” is a short anarchic burst that pummels with velocity, coming in hot at just one minute and 41 seconds. Niki Muliade’s screeching vocals are so sharp they could rip air, matching the aggressive assembly of chunky bass licks, counter-riffing guitars and pattern-switching drumwork. Like how life is rife with surprises, the track changes gears in its second half, heavy but hefty with a lumbering pace – a calculated rock-drenched breakdown that shows impenetrable assuredness in their sound.
With more new songs lined up in their upcoming repertoire, time will tell if Tiny Hoarse prove themselves to be a one-trick pony or a thoroughbred in the local hardcore scene.
