It’s pretty clear by now that the effects of COVID-19 on local party culture are here to stay, despite the dwindling in case numbers. Clubs remain shuttered, full-time DJs and promoters struggle with unemployment, and in the grander scheme of things, its presence within the public consciousness wanes in appeal from a lack of visibility. Shining some light on this dim situation is Blackout Agency, which has been known for throwing some huge haymakers in the events industry for years. With optimism and a good heart, it’s bringing back the sophomore edition of Blackout Broadcast.

Now expanded to three days (from 2 to 4 September), the radio show once again unites the local DJ community with 21 Singapore-based selectors on its lineup. Centred around the uplifting and jolly grooves of house and disco, the soundtrack features an all-star ensemble of producers (Bongomann, Zushan), industry stalwarts (Brendon P, DJ KFC), scene trailblazers (James Selva, Sivanesh), fellow promoters (Aurora, Joshua P, Ya5th), international ambassadors who’ve called Singapore their home (David Carollo, Kevin Sy, Kid Fiesta) and more. Several of these acts haven’t been active on digital performance formats – such as live-streams and recorded mixes – for some time, so the Blackout Broadcast is a great way to catch up with them and the gems in their crates.

Just like its preceding edition, Blackout Broadcast is doing all of this not just to push the local party scene, but to raise awareness and funds for The Food Bank Singapore, its associated charity. This time, all donations will help the charity in the preparation of food bundles for the needy; there are still plenty out there severely affected and disadvantaged by the economic situation, and The Food Bank Singapore is doing what it can to fill this basic necessity. The first Blackout Broadcast managed to raise $18,952 that led to 3,790 free meals – a successful debut endeavour that shows the benevolence of the local party community. Hopefully, this second edition can pull off an even bigger victory.

The local party scene will not be rendered invisible. And it’s initiatives like Blackout Broadcast that hold it in place.
