Like many others in the music scene, The Council has stood its ground, partaking in numerous side activities while waiting for the storm to pass. You’ve probably encountered the vibrant marketing campaigns of the Mate Mate Yerba mate tea it imports, or have already swung by its new snack bar concept called Upstairs. Now, the enterprising collective is about to do what it does best: organising an event that fosters the culture of electronic music for the community. The Council invites you to their first physical event of the year, New Dimensions.

Dubbed an immersive art experience, New Dimensions is set to be a large-scale installation at The Substation, creating a transcendent temple of light and sound designed for the pleasures of deep listening. For this, The Council has teamed up with lighting and motion graphic artist, Flex, who’s adorned the rave halls of previous Plastik Dreams events with his mesmeric handiwork. Yet The Council wishes to emphasise that this isn’t a rave. “These are the stories of the future, adventures in which you’ll live in a million could-be years, on a thousand may-be worlds,” The Council describes on its event page.

This trip for the senses – shaped to simulate the notion of “travelling without moving” – will occur over five shows across three days (4-6 February), with paired soundtracks orchestrated by a selector each. Tasked with this are Deen, Muto Masashi, David Carollo, Bongomann and Aldrin; all of whom are no strangers to The Council’s past shenanigans. Each showcase will be curated for a strict capacity of 40 pax only, with safe distancing measures intact. But rest assured that this spectacle isn’t going to feel like an isolating experience, but a shared journey connected by elements that will erupt, soothe, and coruscate in this debut showcase.

“Our commitment remains the same, to continue to create experiences and memories to last a lifetime. And now, we want to challenge ourselves to create new ways in which arts and music can be experienced,” shares Eileen Chan, co-owner of The Council. With the authorities’ stance on saving our club culture problematic (there are various reasons why clubs didn’t want to take part in the now-delayed pilot scheme), promoters have to take matters into their own hands to preserve and revitalise the pulse of the scene. The Council doesn't want you to forget the power of this culture, and New Dimensions is their next history-making moment.
