Deep Cuts: CŪN Is Hosting A Grassroots Creative Conference Before It Shuts In End-January

While it does take a village to grow creative spaces in Singapore, sometimes all you need is a hut. More specifically, the freewheeling upstarts behind The Glass Hut (or at least, some members of it) have been continuing their mission to support the myriad tenets of the creative community. While The Glass Hut is now a dormant entity – its most famous incarnation was their headquarters habitat at Pearl’s Hill Terrace – it has shown that its spirit embodies more than just a permanent space, but thrives in whichever environment its chieftains pour their heart and soul into. And for the past few months, those folks have been preserving that tradition with CŪN.

The concept of CŪN is transient in nature, and that’s evident first and foremost in its location. Launched in October, CŪN currently resides in the disappearing Peace Centre, an urban relic that’s being swept away by gentrification. You’ll find CŪN rooted within a second storey unit of the fading mall, and like The Glass Hut’s eclectic programming, it’s kept its doors open for all sorts of creatives searching for a space to express themselves. From classes on contact improvisation and weekend flea markets, to live acoustic jams and open-deck sessions for aspiring DJs, CŪN is akin to an incubation studio that wants everyone’s talents to flourish.

In a few week’s time, the versatile space of CŪN will host another ambitious endeavour called Deep Cuts. Happening across two days on 13 and 14 January, Deep Cuts – run by Dione Keh, Wan Jie Che and Anastasiya Varenytsyaaims to be a grassroots creative conference to help foster the creative community in the areas of networking, knowledge exchange and performance.

Through workshops, panel discussions and exhibitions, Deep Cuts hopes to enlighten all attendees and participants with a roadmap of what it takes to build and sustain a creative scene in Singapore. Think deep dive dialogues about the art of butoh and graffiti, life drawing and climate change, journalism and physical spaces, and so much more. We hear there’s also gonna be an official party gathering several artists, promoters and collectives for an all-night marathon gig.

CŪN officially closes its doors on 29 January. So if you’re a creative who needs a private space to experiment, or if you’re a spectator hunting for new experiences from the creative community, you know where to go.
