With big prospects come big pay-offs. Being the catalysing tastemakers that they are, Thugshop doused the scene in suspense when they first announced the arrival of their new pop-up concept, XXL. The hype quickly spread and swelled, culminating in a teaser gig on 11 February that flaunted the oversized concept that they promised – a bigger dancefloor, bigger sound and bigger visuals. It was hard not to tangibly feel the immense potential of the 500-pax space, and like a foreshadowing, the event appeared to be a preview of something much grander. Come the month of March, these hunches will be proven right.

Thugshop’s XXL series officially kicks into high gear across March with four massive gigs. The nightlife honchos have been so far influential in restoring Singapore’s underground party circuit with top international bookings at Headquarters and Tuff Club since the scene’s reopening. But with XXL, these bookings possess a star-powered tier that justifies the need for a more spacious setting. The launch of XXL also represents the opening of MDLR, the name of Thugshop’s new pop-up space at 62 Cecil Street that will remain in place for the foreseeable future.

Getting the ball rolling on 3 March is KI/KI, the techno firestarter who’s known for her swift tempos and resplendent trance-inclined textures, melding the sensations of blazing aggression and heavenly bliss. On 8 March, the techno train doesn’t stop with the return of Anetha, the French hard-hitter who’s no stranger to Thugshop dancefloors with her rolling, hammering artillery. 10 March also sees the much-awaited comeback of one of techno’s most punishing selectors, with Dax J slated to decimate the MDLR dancefloor with tracks that aren’t for the faint-hearted. And finally on 18 March, Thugshop teams up with the newly-formed Soul Collective to drop one more bombshell with the Innervisions captain himself, Dixon, who’s been a figure of reverence with his wisdom in melodic, journey-conscious techno.

Pick one, or pick all. You’ll need plenty of stamina to power through this XXL month.
