Rising Arp: Aggressive Raisin Cat Spills “Ramen” Onto The Progressive Metalcore Scene

Don’t let the preposterous name bamboozle you. Aggressive Raisin Cat is a band that has its claws out. The brewing coterie is a nascent addition to the local metalcore scene, and they’re pouncing into the fray with a new arc.

Before we unravel this ball of yarn, here’s a little context about the quintet. After emerging in 2019 with a stray single, “Edgelord”, and a string of gigs at locales like Lithe House, Decline and Tonehouse Studios, the ravenous lads are ready to unleash their debut EP with their take on progressive modern metal. Igniting the first sparks from this dynamite package is “Ramen”, and there’s a lot to digest in this soup of anarchy.

“The song depicts my personal struggles with imposter syndrome and attempts to carve a clear image of the contradictions that come with turbulent emotions,” shares Janssen Chang, the vocalist of Aggressive Raisin Cat. He illustrates this eloquently with sheer vocal prowess, shapeshifting from guttural outbursts and vampiric shrieks to clear untarnished chorus lines with Jekyll-Hyde adeptness.

The music aptly matches the mayhem, sending a blitzy barrage of raucous destruction. Charging forward like a behemoth are piercing salvoes of beats and seething guitars that shred like a chainsaw. Yet even within the onslaught, you’ll find graceful string accoutrements and dramatic, nimble guitar solos that rise above the racket. “Drawing inspiration from many subgenres of metal, I had the intention of remaining true to my roots as a thrash metal enthusiast with my riff-writing, while infusing elements of modern metalcore and progressive metalcore that I’ve grown to love over the years into the song,” states Aaron Devoy, the band’s guitarist.

And just when you think the offense is over, “Ramen” leaves one last taste in your mouth with a bellicose outro. Dropping a final Bankai-level assault that has the whole band firing on all cylinders, the new single unforgivably leaves listeners in the dust of its sonic stampede. These are the wild antics of Aggressive Raisin Cat. Like tempestuous felines, their capers will leave some scratches.
