The Midnight Gospel: Escape 56 Takes You To Church For Its Double-Billed 7-Year Anniversary

When you think Midnight Gospel, you’re inclined to picture the surreal and contemplative universe of the Adventure Time-esque animated series. And in that mind-boggling sense, the trend-benders of Escape 56 – co-led by Blackout Agency and Jägermeister – are following suit with an anniversary shindig that treads out of the box. The seasonal party series has been known for popping up in hushed secret locations like city skyscrapers and industrial warehouses, but this upcoming one truly takes the cake. For its seven-year hurrah, Escape 56 is taking over a 4,500 sq ft private space that converts into a church. You read that right. It’s about to get divine.

Welcoming all saints and sinners, The Midnight Gospel is an ambitious event that carries Escape 56’s tradition of providing fresh party experiences in unexpected locations. “Jägermeister and I embarked on this project seven years ago with the idea of breaking people out of their usual clubbing routines and showing them a raw, gritty side of the Singapore electronic music scene,” shares Zig Zach who heads Blackout Agency. “Hunting for unique spaces on an island with very scarce land is quite the mission. Sometimes we'll find a space and the license gets turned down, or the owners don't want a party or neighbouring HDB flats and building management don’t approve. But when you do find the perfect venue, it's always exciting to envision a space and see it become this pop-up club.”

The Midnight Gospel is indeed a party cathedral promising two nights of shimmy-ready sermons. To accomplish this, Escape 56 has teamed up with two other high-profile promoters, with each night delivering an international headliner and a crew of homegrown favourites. With Sivilian Affairs on 12 April, The Midnight Gospel preaches dancefloor blessings with Rey Colino, don of the Kalahari Oyster Cult record label revered for its ’90s-inspired house and techno catalogue. Supporting him will the dream team of Robo X, Mako and Brian. While on 13 April, FOMOHOMO tags in to host Berghain/Panorama Bar resident, Massimiliano Pagliara, whose range stretches across disco, electro and house. He will be opened by Meraki Soul, Loyboy and Jas.

“It's always fantastic to hear from the punters who message us and say, ‘We never expected this kind of party in Singapore’ or ‘It's so nice to do something different and see a different side of Singapore's party scene’,” Zach elaborates. And to achieve this, he’s pulled in another innovative attraction for The Midnight Gospel designed to complement the music. Onsite will be an interactive art exhibition by Thiscover, where vinyl, animation and Augmented Reality come together to reel guests into a trippy voyage, much like the premise of its animated series muse.

“Together with Jägermeister, we’ll keep pushing the subculture and what we believe in,” Zach concludes. So if you’re looking for a party experience that’s one-of-a-kind, The Midnight Gospel is here to answer your prayers.
