Indie-Pop Singer-Songwriter Marian Carmel Plugs Singapore’s First Roller Skating Concert
Why sport your rugged gig boots when you can slip on roller skates at a concert? Infusing a playful twist into the live gig experience, singer-songwriter Marian Carmel is throwing an EP launch party at an indoor skating rink – a freewheeling feat that she brazenly proclaims as “Singapore’s first roller-skating concert”. Taking place at Hi Roller Indoor Skating Rink, the first-of-its-kind showcase offers both skating and non-skating tickets, with a retro disco-themed dress code that matches the bittersweet flashbacks scattered across this album.
Titled what if nobody kisses me?, the indie-pop EP is a saccharine, sun-kissed archive of ‘hopeless romantic’ memories collected by Marian like tchotchkes in a Mason jar. Ranging from innocent encounters to rickety developments, the euphoniously-crafted anecdotes – produced by Charlie Kurata (Benjamin Kheng, Jean Seizure) – tell tales of falling for a friend and prematurely patching things up with an ex, among other romance predicaments that’d make you think “Oops, been there before”. The album’s also a nod to Marian’s Filipino roots with bilingual bop “wanted you”, and her friendships with fellow collaborators like RENE on the carpe diem-inclined “we’re gonna die anyway!!!”.
