The roaring spirit of reggae and dub is aptly alive and well in the Lion City, and the colours are about to fly high with the flagbearers of Singapura Dub Club. Helmed by reggae icon and self-professed Far East Empress, Masia One, Singapura Dub Club has been instrumental in plugging the niche sounds of Jamaica and other affiliated genres in our tiny isle halfway across the world. One might deem it an odd formula to success. Yet after a decade of hosting gigs with regional counterparts and international legends like Sister Nancy and General Levy, sizzling dance battles, Caribbean cookouts and other cultural jamborees, Masia and crew have proven that reggae can indeed rise in Singapore.

Which is why it’s pulling out the big guns for its 10-year bashment. A festive bonanza of celebrations that spans two days and four events, Singapura Dub Club’s decade-commemorating anniversary will see the worldly movement take over multiple locations in the city. The marathon revelry has revealed a lineup of lifestyle activities that encapsulates the vast ambit of Singapura Dub Club, all promoting its feel-good motto of “Together, Good Vibes Can Grow”.

On 7 September, Singapura Dub Club first takes over El Chido for a daytime Soul Vibes Pool Party, blasting reggae, Afrobeats, dancehall and ragga hip-hop. Headlined by Japan’s Sarasa, Canada’s DJ Justo and Bali’s CBee, the splash bash will have you wet while whetting your appetite with jerk chicken tacos and island rum cocktails. Following that, the anniversary’s second event happens just downstairs at Moga for a rare SG Dub Bass Session in an izakaya, with bumpier sounds like steppa and jungle unleashed by Philippines’ Irie Sundays, Jakarta’s Yella Sky Sound System and Langkawi’s Dubclub.

If your Sundays aren’t for sleeping in, you might wanna keep it going for the comeback of Suka Suka Sunday on 8 September. Bring down the family and fur babies for a free Caribbean cookout at Novotel on Stevens, and stuff your face with jerk chicken and vegan delicacies while grooving to roots reggae and lovers rock. And wrapping up the merriment in the same location is the anniversary’s finale event – a live reggae concert celebrating 10 years of reggae, dub and dancehall with apex artists from Southeast Asia including Indonesia’s Ras Muhamad and Denny Frust, Australia’s Jah Wise, and Singapore’s own Bushmen along with the empress herself, Masia One.
