Electronica Phenom The Analog Girl Releases Equinox, Her First Album In Four Years
You ever had one of those pleasant recurring dreams that revisits your dormant psyche when you least expect it? They’re often something intangible yet beautiful, and you never quite know when you’ll be fortunate enough to re-encounter such beguiling experiences. That to me is the perpetual mystery of The Analog Girl, whose sporadic yet mesmeric output has made her one of the most significant electronic voices of our generation since debuting back in 2005 (read our interview feature with The Analog Girl). Awakening from her slumber, The Analog Girl has now weaved a new mini album after a four-year lull.
Titled Equinox – the album is also released on the equinox date of 22 September – the eight-track compilation is an ode to love and astronomy, all while capturing the electronica essence of The Analog Girl. Marking its release is “Tides”, a soporific and intoxicating gem that enraptures with visuals of cotton candy clouds and fragile bubbles you don’t wanna burst. Layers of swirly synthscapes give it depth amidst a lo-fi electronic beat and The Analog Girl’s signature reverb-cradled vocals that are both pacifying and haunting, not unlike the hypnotism of a Beach House track. “Tides” follows preceding Equinox singles like neo-ballad “Phases” and the noir-synthwave-influenced “Zodiac”, demonstrating an experimental album that explores a spectrum of sounds.
“I view solar tides and lunar tides as mood influencers,” shares The Analog Girl about the song. “Tides are also used as a symbol of renewal, but can also represent emotional turbulence. They mark beginnings and ends.” It’s a symbolic attachment that too resembles the captivating ebb and flow of The Analog Girl’s repertoire. Patient and pure, it’s an Analog Girl record worth waiting for, and a dream I personally never want to end.
