DARE Festival Shows The Non-Discriminatory Power Of Music Featuring Artists With Disabilities
The universal sway of music and art has the power to touch all, even those who conquer each day living with disabilities. Unshackled by their circumstances, there are performers in Singapore who overcome limitations to express themselves on the stage. They dare to rise up and turn adversity into strength, and recognising the mettle of such performers for the third year is the DARE Festival.
The DARE Festival is driven by social change, providing an inclusive avenue for artists from diverse backgrounds and disabilities. DARE Festival 2024 is another commendable showing of courage, with a focus this year on the deaf community and persons with vision impairments. Its multi-act show comprises the chapters of “Dare To Be” celebrating self-discovery and identity, “Dare To Live” exploring the notion of living fully and authentically, and “Dare To Be-Live” envisioning a more inclusive future.
Happening at Gateway Theatre on 13 November 2024, DARE Festival 2024 follows a collaborative format with each performance being a partnership between established acts and artists living with disabilities. This includes Lily Goh, a local TikTok standout who teaches about Singapore sign language and deaf music; and other inspiring figures like Sky Shen, Andrea Hosking and the Diverse Abilities Dance Collective.
With many others, they will be paired with seasoned veterans and rising stars in the music scene. This lineup includes jazz doyenne Jacintha, pop sensation shazza, classic rock band Reverie, and reggae pioneer Masia One. Masia shares, "The DARE Festival is a unique platform which brings together so many diverse and wonderful talents, who are all driven by the same motivation to champion inclusivity”.
DARE is a movement of empowerment that shows instances of bravery and resilience, and it’s a potent reminder that music doesn’t discriminate. It’s for everyone.
