Lagoon Laundry: There’s A New Series Featuring Budding DJs In A Katong Laundromat
Why twiddle your thumbs and sit still like an NPC while you wait for your laundry to finish? Pushing the idea of multitasking to the next level is Lagoon Laundry, a not-so-average laundromat service that’s been rolling through social media feeds like a washing machine drum.
The content that’s being rinsed through the scene? Footage of live-recorded DJ showcases set against the eye-catchingly peculiar backdrop of a laundromat business. Never mind toilet sets from HÖR Berlin that feel cold and austere; Lagoon Laundry switches it up with a no-frills locale that feels authentic and relatable. Exposed mannequins, messy shelves and hung laundry orders wrapped in plastic surround a makeshift DJ setup, positioned in front of a burly wall of washing machines that resemble the stature of a soundsystem stack.
Lagoon Laundry’s programming launched just recently in March, but it’s already published several sets featuring nascent homegrown selectors who most wouldn’t have heard of yet. These fresh-faced sets have introduced the deep house of Warlock (co-founder of Lagoon Laundry), the hard techno of AYNE, the speedy trance of beansclub and the vocal house of Mother Lover. It’s an eclectic programming that eschews imposing barriers on genre or skillset, and it’s reflective of an ongoing trend of younger up-and-comers grasping DIY opportunities, to play a role in a scene rife with limited avenues to perform and get noticed. In that sense, Lagoon Laundry’s spin on giving DJs a chance is admirable – and let’s be frank, it’s entertaining to hear club sounds in a setting like this.
What’s more amusing is that Lagoon Laundry actually appears to be a legitimate laundromat business in Katong V. A sneak peek at its website shows an extensive price list of laundry services for different types of clothing, complete with a backstory of the brand and customer testimonials. Its social media content even shows completed laundry of its featured guest DJs. So there you go – if you ever need to give your clothes a wash while giving the decks a scrub, put a pin on Lagoon Laundry.
